Chuck Heitner
April 29, 1967

Although Chuck was seriously ill with cancer during his junior and senior years, his sense of humor and determination kept his illness private from most of us. The cancer was found first in his Thymus plate, and then spread throughout his body. His mother, Daisy, said Chuck did not want his friends to see him ill so the family moved together to Waskom, Texas where he is also buried. A favorite story shared by many is of Chuck being allowed the choice to travel from Colorado (where he was taking cobalt treatments), back to Ponca to attend either the Prom or graduation. He chose the Prom but the plane had to emergency-land in Kansas with Chuck and Dr. Bob Gibson eventually hitch-hiking home. They didn't arrive until 1 a.m. …. But isn't that what after-prom parties are for?
